The Lipton Cup was offered by Sir Thomas Lipton, a great Irish sports enthusiast, to the fastest smack (a traditional fishing boat used off the coast of England and the Atlantic Coast of America for most of the 19th century) running in Massachusetts Bay. This image, attributed to the esteemed sailing photographer Nathaniel Livermore Stebbins, shows a smack racing for the Lipton Cup in 1907.
