The Chief - United States, circa 1923 Photographer:

This photograph shows a Klamath Indian chief in ceremonial headdress overlooking Crater Lake. The lake has long been regarded as a sacred site of the Klamath Indians as their legends tell of a war between the sky god Skell and the god of the underworld Liao in which, during one of their battles, Mount Mazama was destroyed and resulted in the formation of Crater Lake.
