Boatmen in the City of Madras - India, circa 1880 Photographer:

Until the harbor was constructed in Madras (currently called Chennai), flimsy catamarans, such as the one pictured here, accompanied the massulah boats bringing passengers ashore to rescue anyone who was unfortunate enough to be swept overboard. Photographed by the firm Nicholas & Co, the three men pictured in this image possess very relaxed demeanors, providing a considered contrast to the rolling surf in which they ply their trade.
